character research: polar bears

Our story (as the title suggests) has a family of three Polar Bears… and they aren’t a normal Polar Bear family. For instance, they live in a cabin and they like to eat porridge for breakfast. I’ve been developing some Polar Bear characters for several months now and even introduced them earlier this year at an art show I had in Nelson, BC in January. Below is a detail of Agatha, or Mother Polar Bear, acrylic and pencil on hand dyed canvas.
Some facts about Polar Bears:
Polar Bears Ursus Maritimus, are found in the arctic circle and surrounding land masses: Alaska, Canada, Russia, Greenland, and Norway. Their Scientific name chiefly means sea faring or maritime bear. Although it is closely related to the brown bear, the Polar Bear has evolved to occupy a narrow ecological niche, with many body characteristics adapted for cold temperatures, for moving across snow, ice, and open water, and for hunting the seals which make up most of its diet. Polar bears hunt consistently only from sea ice, which is why they spend much of the year on and near the edge of the frozen sea.
